HELMETS Have Several Advantages

Recently, wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler, has been made mandatory in Pune, the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra in India. The Traffic Police Department of Pune enforced this rule with an aim to lower the number of accidents and the casualties resulting due to the same. While this is very thoughtful of the police department, people are still reluctant about wearing helmets citing various (mostly silly) reasons like:

  • Helmets cause discomfort.
  • It is difficult to carry the helmets when not riding the bike.
  • Wearing a helmet messes the hair.
But these reasons are negligible compared to your precious life. Helmets have been in existence since the middle ages. However, they were restricted to military use in the earlier times. With time the designs and the use of helmets evolved. The headgear now was also used for protecting players’ head while playing games and safeguarding the riders of a carriage. Today, the significance of a helmet is all the more germane as the roads are heavily flooded with speeding vehicles and the chances of being in an accident are very high. Also, the patch works and continuous development of the Indian roads increase the chances of accidents.

The significance of wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle:

  • Helmets can help prevent head injuries — When you wear a helmet, the impact of an accident on your head is reduced. If you are not wearing a helmet while riding your two-wheeler, it is quite likely that if you are engaged in an accident, the following head injuries will be fatal. If you are involved in a collision without wearing a helmet, it is possible that you can suffer exterior and internal brain injuries, both of which can be fatal. As a result, helmets should be worn to protect your life.

  • Helmets protect your eyes — A full-faced helmet protects your entire face in the event of an accident. When riding a two-wheeler, this style of helmet shields your eyes from dust and high-beam lighting. Furthermore, the design of this helmet allows you to drive with the widest possible field of vision.

  • Helmets improve vehicle handling - It has been discovered that wearing a helmet while riding your bike improves your attention. When you're riding your two-wheeler with a helmet on, you're more likely to be cautious and regulate your speed. This greatly reduces the likelihood of an accident.

  • Wearing a helmet not only protects your head, but it also shields your ears from the cold breeze. This layer of protection keeps the chilly breeze out of your ears, keeping you healthy and preventing you from becoming sick in the cold. In addition, because of the solid inline cushioning, wearing a helmet in the summer helps you stay cool.
  • You can avoid fines by wearing a helmet – With the mandatory helmet requirement in force, traffic cops are on the lookout for those riding their bikes without one. As a result, you should wear a helmet when driving to avoid incurring significant fines and damaging your driving record.

Tips to purchase a Helmet

  • Purchase a helmet for both the driver and the pillion rider to protect the safety of everyone on the bike.
  • A full-faced helmet should always be purchased because it protects your complete face and provides total safety.

  • Helmets have an expiration date as well. As a result, you should replace your helmet every 3-5 years.
  • To ensure clear eyesight when riding your bike, clean the glass of your helmet on a regular basis.
  • If your helmet is damaged in a collision, replace it right away.
